Non-cooperative exploitation of multi-cohort fisheries—The role of gear selectivity in the North-East Arctic cod fishery

چکیده
North-East Arctic cod is shared by Russia and Norway. Taking its multi-cohort structure into account, how would optimal management look like? How would non-cooperative exploitation limit the obtainable profits? To which extent could the strategic situation explain today’s over-harvesting? Simulation of a detailed bioeconomic model reveals that the mesh size should be significantly increased, resulting not only in a doubling of economic gains, but also in a biologically healthier age-structure of the stock. The Nash equilibrium is close to the current regime. Even when effort is fixed to its optimal level, the non-cooperative choice of gear selectivity leads to a large dissipation of rents. 2010 Elsevier B.V. Spare the Young Fish: Optimal Harvesting Policies for North-East Arctic Cod
The North-East Arctic cod (Gadus morhua) fishery, as most other commercial fisheries, is wasting the larger part of its potential. Examining a detailed multi-cohort, multigear bioeconomicmodel, we show that the cause is rather a too smallmesh size than excessive effort. Although internationally and nationallymanaged by quota allocations and regulations, the current exploitation pattern implies ...
متن کاملThe growing value of age : Exploring economic gains from age - specific harvesting in the North - East Arctic cod fishery
The importance of the fish stock’s age-structure is increasingly recognized in economics and ecology. Still, current policies predominately rely on measures of the aggregate biomass. Here, a detailed bio-economic model is calibrated on the North-East Arctic cod fishery to assess the efficiency gains from controlling gear selectivity and explore them under a suite of different scenarios. While t...

The proximate composition, amino acids and fatty acids composition in the muscle of wild, inshore and offshore cage-cultured large yellow croaker, Pseudosciaena crocea (Richardson, 1846), were determined to identify nutritional differences. Wild fish groups showed highest content of moisture and crude protein, but the lowest lipid content. Offshore cage-cultured fish showed significantly higher...
متن کاملThe dangers of ignoring stock complexity in fishery management: the case of the North Sea cod.
The plight of the marine fisheries is attracting increasing attention as unsustainably high exploitation levels, exacerbated by more extreme climatic conditions, are driving stocks to the point of collapse. The North Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), a species which until recently formed a major component of the demersal fisheries, has undergone significant declines across its range. The North Sea s...
متن کاملTaking animal breeding into the wild: regulation of fishing gear can make fish stocks evolve higher productivity
Harvesting of living resources involves conflicting objectives between profits, human consumption, population sustainability and ecological impacts. These trade-offs are often complex, as harvesting affects demography and productivity of wild populations immersed in rich ecological interactions, and consequences may extend to the evolutionary dimension. In a life-history model of a commercially...
